International Students

Introduction to the Canadian Education System

Canada has one of the most advanced and respected educational systems in the world. The Province of Ontario alone has 19 universities and 24 colleges. Degrees offered by all the universities and colleges are being recognized around the globe. In fact, many universities have very strong reputation because of their programs’ popularity and world renowned status. Some examples include University of Waterloo’s computer science and accounting degrees, Queen’s University engineering and business programs as well as York University’s marketing program to name just a few.

Conforming to the curriculum polices and regulations of the Ontario Ministry of Education, Franklin College School offers grade 9 to grade 12 credit courses, university preparatory courses and ESL programs. We actively pursue innovation and promote excellence in teaching. Our primary objective is to provide a pathway for international students to enter prestigious universities of their choice in Canada.

A student must have a minimum of 30 credits to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) in order to be considered for university acceptance. International students are granted overseas equivalency credits based upon their previous successful secondary school work in their own country.

Students who wish to apply for university entrance in Canada, and do not have a High School Diploma, must obtain an OSSD that includes a minimum of six (6) “U” or “M” or a combination of 4 “U” and a maximum of “2 M” credits. Any or all of these six credits may already be among the 30 credits of the OSSD. University and College entrance requires students to have an OSSD or a High School Diploma from their country of origin.

For students from overseas and outside Ontario, the Principal will assess their school records and determine the number of equivalency credits that the students will be granted and indicate the remaining number of courses they are required to complete in order to qualify for the OSSD. Please consult the following table for credit equivalency assessment in general, and note that in certain cases assessment is conducted on the basis of individual evaluation.
